What is asthma?

People with asthma have sensitive airways. These airways are more likely to react to triggers. The

lining of the airways is thicker and inflamed. When a person with asthma has an asthma flare-up, the

muscles around the airway squeeze tight, the airways swell and become narrow, and there is more

mucus. This makes it hard to breathe. Click below to learn more about asthma.

Let’s talk about asthma symptom control

Everyone with asthma needs a reliever puffer (usually blue) for quick relief when their symptoms like shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, and coughing start, and for asthma first aid.

However, if you only use a reliever to treat your asthma, you are treating the symptoms but not the cause. This means your airways are more likely to react to triggers and are not protected from the increased risk of an asthma attack.  People who rely too much on their reliever have a higher chance of severe and even life-threatening asthma attacks.

If you can relate to any of this, talk to your doctor about the possibility of being prescribed an asthma preventer. A preventer will treat the underlying inflammation and sensitivity inside your airways. Most people with asthma can lower how much they need their reliever puffer if they use a preventer regularly.

How good or bad is your asthma?

Find out your level of asthma control by completing the Asthma Control Questionnaire below. Once completed take your asthma control score with you to your next doctors’ visit or give Asthma Australia a call to discuss your options on 1800 278 462.

Do you have a written Asthma Action Plan?

An Asthma Action Plan is like an instruction manual for your asthma written by your doctor. Everyone with asthma should have an Asthma Action Plan, no matter how old you are or how mild your asthma might feel. It’s your guide on how to manage your asthma and what to do if you do have a flare-up or asthma attack.

Your doctor should always write the plan with you, not for you. This means they ask you about your triggers, our symptoms and what you can do to treat them. The goal of the Asthma Action Plan is to prevent and control asthma symptoms. Even if you know what to do when your asthma flares up, it is very useful to have clear instructions from your doctor written down in an emergency.
